The Minister of Agriculture Highlighted the Need of Reforms in Water Sector

The Minister of Agriculture Sergo Karapetyan today has met with the heads of State Committee of Water Economy and with the heads of companies of irrigation system for discussing the problems available in the sector and for identifying ways of solutions.

“It is necessary to implement serious reforms in this sector, to increase the operational efficiency of Water Users Associations in order to increase public confidence towards this system”,- noted Sergo Karapetyan. Referring to the most important problems available in this sector, the Minister, first, considered necessary to tighten supervision of the sector, to enhance the transparency, to take measures on reducing water losses.

“In early spring we should be fully ready for irrigation season, so that villagers not to have problems with water use”,- added the Minister. As of December 4, 2014, by decision of the RA Government the State Committee of Water Economy was placed under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Agriculture, the goal of which was to increase the efficiency of irrigation projects.
